Hello! I'm Carmen Ibarra, a painter and art teacher. For some time now, I've been sharing my knowledge with everyone who comes to my workshops.
I invite you to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of watercolor through an intensive three-day workshop, where you can connect with the magic of this technique and unleash your creativity in an inspiring environment.
The workshop takes place in Lalambik, an authentic art studio in the heart of Ruzafa, where we work in a close and creative environment.
This course is designed for both beginners and experienced artists. Over three sessions, we'll explore watercolor techniques from the basics to more advanced methods, using creative and accessible exercises that will allow each participant to discover their own artistic path and form of expression.

CONTENT
In this workshop, we will explore the fundamentals of painting using watercolor techniques. We will analyze how to approach a painting project and delve into essential concepts such as composition, light, color, and texture.
We will focus on mixing colors from the primaries, experimenting with different types of paper and materials ideal for this technique.
We will work with wet and dry techniques, creating overlays, gradients and textures, and we will master the use of the brush to bring our creations to life.
Day 1. The color
The study of color is the first lesson for any painting technique.
Exercise 1: Chromatic Flower
We will create a color wheel using the design of a 12-petaled flower, using only the three primary colors. We will learn the importance of the color wheel and its application in painting, thus understanding its relevance in art.
Exercise 2. Forest of infinite grays
Once we understand the color wheel, we will create an imaginary forest using the colors resulting from mixing complementary colors, or in other words, mixing the three primary colors together. We will explore the infinite color variations that arise from these mixtures. We will also experiment with color layering and learn the concepts of wet-on-wet and dry painting.

Day 2. The brush and the light
There is a big difference between painting and coloring. Painting involves using a brush to create shapes, while coloring involves drawing and filling in with color.
Pressure, speed, and brush angle produce varied results. In this workshop, we will focus on painting, allowing the brush to bring forms to life through its movement. In this way, the painting will acquire a more genuine and fresh character.
Exercise 1. The garden.

We will carry out a creative exercise in which we will create a textured background on wet-on-wet paint, leaving blank spaces to represent flowers. Once the background has dried, we will practice brushwork to explore different effects, working both on dry and wet surfaces, and applying washes, among other techniques.
Watercolor is built up using transparent layers. The light comes from the inherent luminosity of the white paper, which remains visible through the water and the paint. Understanding this principle is one of the keys to mastering the technique.
Exercise 2. Free brush.
Now we will do an exercise inspired by “Oriental painting” to free the hand and explore the grace of the brushstroke through movement and sensitivity. We will learn to “be free with the brush” and also to create fluid gradients.

Day 3. Painting from life
Now that we have learned to mix colors, handle the brush and create different effects and textures, as well as understand that luminosity comes from the water and the white of the paper, we will focus on taking references from nature to observe them and capture them in beautiful watercolors.
Exercise 1: breads
We will create a composition in which we learn to capture the exact colors of the model from life. We will also discover how to darken colors using their complements, and we will apply washes to the most saturated tones to achieve greater luminosity and interesting textures.
Exercise 2. Flowers
This is an exercise where we will combine wet and dry techniques. The first step is to observe forms from nature in order to reproduce them. We will use natural flowers as a reference.

🌿 Watercolor workshop for beginners at the Botanical Garden of Valencia
As part of my summer offerings, I also teach an introductory watercolor experience at the Botanical Garden of Valencia.
This is a 3-hour workshop in a small group of a maximum of 4 people, designed as a first contact with watercolor in a natural and very inspiring environment.
During the session we will approach the basic concepts of color, brushstrokes and wet and dry techniques, so that you can begin to move freely in the language of watercolor.
It is a completely hands-on experience, in which the Botanical Garden becomes our workspace, surrounded by nature and in a particularly pleasant environment during the summer months.
The workshop includes all necessary materials and admission to the Botanical Garden. No prior experience is required, just a desire to enjoy the creative process.

It is an experience designed to enjoy the creative process without prior experience, in which we explore color and landscape observation from the calm offered by the sea.
The group is small, with a maximum of 4 people, which allows for close and personalized support throughout the session.

Due to various personal reasons, my watercolor painting had been dormant, but I recently made the best decision in this regard: signing up for an intensive workshop at L'Alambik with the painter Carmen Ibarra. It was three intense days of activity, learning, creation, techniques, and more, all taught by an artist who clearly loves her profession and is incredibly generous in sharing her knowledge. I hope to build on her efforts and the momentum I've gained to continue dedicating time and attention to this activity that I love so much. Carmen, we'll see each other again, and THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Thank you so much, Vicente! I'm so glad I awakened that dormant passion in you, and I look forward to seeing the watercolors from your trip. Travel is a wonderful opportunity to capture those moments, and every time you see those paintings, you'll relive those beautiful times. See you soon!

I had the opportunity to attend an intensive watercolor course with Carmen, an experience I highly recommend not only for her patience and dedication in sharing her art, but also for her character. It was a pleasure to meet her and the three other women in the group. It was a very pleasant surprise not only to participate in an activity I enjoy, but also to meet people who are truly worth getting to know.
Thank you so much, Llanos! It's been a great pleasure having you at the intensive workshop, and I hope to see you anytime at Lalambik to continue watercoloring!

I just finished a workshop with Carmen, a true pleasure in terms of both her personality and motivation. And, above all, a new way of seeing watercolor painting: free, joyful, sweet… In short, I highly recommend it 100%.
